IRI - TECH
Imagine you are a spy (insert James Bond BGM for the impact) on a mission to take over the world's most feared gangster . Sensing the ambush your enemy has reached to his secret hide out. After investigation you found his location and arrived there. Fighting the guards heroically ,you find yourself in front of a room secured by an iris scanner.
(Your point of view)-"Ahh!! I wish Open Sesame worked here. How do I get through this iris scanner?". Suddenly the room opens and you find your mom out of the blue, asking you to wake up.
MISSION FAILED!!!!
"ARGH!! MOMMA !! I was about to catch the culprit but then you had to ruin it. I really wonder how iris scanner works 🤔ðŸ’".
Here we are with the required information lucidly:
Iris recognition or iris scanning is a form of biometric technology that uses visible and near-infrared light to take a high-contrast photograph of a person’s iris.
Elaborating the above, Biometric iris recognition scanners work by illuminating the iris with invisible infrared light to pick up unique patterns that are not visible to the naked eye.
The pattern of the eye’s lines and colors are analyzed to extract a bit pattern that encodes the information in the iris. The obtained bit pattern is then digitized and compared with the stored templates in the database for verification or identification.
Looks pretty simple, but the development is arduous.
Regardless of all the hurdles, UAE was the first among all countries to develop Iris Guard’s Homeland Security Border Control, an expellee tracking system in use since 2003. A national border-crossing security initiative where foreign nationals who need a visa to enter UAE are now processed through iris cameras installed at all primary and auxiliary immigration inspection points.
Another development dates back to 2009 in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordon. Iris Guard deployed the world's first operational iris enabled Automated Teller Machine(ATM) at Cairo Amman Bank, where the customers can seamlessly withdraw cash from ATM's without any bank card or pin but simply by presenting their eye to the iris recognition camera on the ATM.

In
this process, the Iris scanners collect around 240 biometric features, the
amalgamation of which is unique to every eye. The scanners then create a
digital representation of the data, and finally, the numeric representation of
information extracted from the iris image is stored in the computer
database. iris scans are quicker and more reliable than fingerprint scans
since it is easier for an individual to obscure or alter their fingers than it
is to alter their eyes.

Thirdly,
in our very own country, India. The operation began in 2011, in which the
government started enrolling the iris patterns (and other biometrics) of more
than one billion residents for the Aadhaar scheme for entitlements
distribution, run by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
